ROBINSON NAMED TO OVC ALL-NEWCOMER TEAM AND HONORABLE MENTION ALL-OVC SQUAD
RICHMOND, Ky. - Eastern Kentucky University freshman guard Whitney Robinson has been named to the 1998-99 Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer Team, as well as receiving All-OVC honorable mention notice in balloting of the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
Robinson, 5-11, 165, who hails from Detroit, MI, led the Colonels and finished tied for second in the conference in scoring with his 17.8 per game mark. He also was listed among the league leaders in three-pointers made per game (77, 2.96 pg.) and free throw percentage (.784).
Robinson is also listed among the nation's top 10 freshman scorers, ranking seventh in the last listing (Feb. 26), and he was a three-time pick for OVC Rookie of the Week honors this season for the Colonels.
"Whitney had an excellent first season of collegiate basketball and, certainly, his best basketball is ahead of him," said EKU head coach Scott Perry. "He worked at improving his game all season long and it is a goal of his to one day be a member of that first-team All-OVC team.
"Whitney showed a lot of character this year. He played hard and competed at his best every night. As a coach, that's all you can ask. We're looking forward to having him three more years."
Other members of the OVC's All-Newcomer Team included 6-5 sophomore Trenton Hassell and 6-1 sophomore Nick Stapleton of Austin Peay; 6-5 freshman Erik Brown of Morehead State; 6-2 junior Josh Heard and 6-1 junior Corey Hemphill of Tennessee Tech; 6-6 junior Roderick Johnson of Southeast Missouri; 6-7 junior Corey Williams of Tennessee State; and 6-6 junior Cedrick Wallace of Middle Tennessee.
On the season, Robinson hit 38.0 percent from the field and 35.8 percent from three-point territory, in addition to averaging 4.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. He also led the club in steals (39) and minutes played per game (35.2) this season.
The Colonels finished with a 3-23 overall record and 2-16 mark in the OVC.
